An archipelago in northern Scotland, Orkney is 16 kilometres (10 mi) north of the coast of Caithness, and comprises of approximately 70 islands of which 20 are inhabited. The largest island, known as 'the mainland’, is home to most of the total 20,000 population. The most dramatic scenery is along the coast where 300m cliffs plunge into white, sandy beaches.

Stenigar was originally built around 1825 as a boat house and converted and redesigned in 1946 by the late Stanley Cursiter, painter, sculptor and director of the National Galleries of Scotland. Located on the edge of Stromness, Stenigar has panoramic views, the beach on 2 sides, the golf course behind the house and the town a few minutes walk away.
